 One of the oldest neighborhoods in St. Pete, the Old Southeast began to take shape in the 1900s. One of the Old Southeast's earliest homes, known today as the Bayboro House, was built during this period as the home for the area's primary developer. Like many of St. Pete's early neighborhoods, building quickened during the 1920s, slowed, and then accelerated again in the post-WWII period. Brick streets, hexagonal sidewalks, and alleyways were common features, but the homes ranged widely in style and size from one-story Craftsman Bungalow and concrete block houses to larger Colonial Revival and Victorian. In 1924, one of those early residents, Judge Robert B. Lassing, permanently altered the feel of the neighborhood when he donated over 12 acres of waterfront property to the city with the stipulation that it be used as public park space. Over the next two decades, additional land was donated and in 1942, Lassing Park was dedicated.

 Today, Lassing Park is a defining feature of this diverse, quaint, tree-filled, pedestrian and bike-friendly residential neighborhood. The park offers unobstructed views across Tampa Bay as well as a perfect place to walk your dog, launch a kayak, or perfect your kite-surfing skills. In addition to the park, many of the early lovingly-renovated homes remain as do a significant number of brick avenues and hexagonal block sidewalks. The occasional newly-built homes blend seamlessly with the area's feel. Residents are proud to be one of only two neighborhoods in St. Petersburg to be designated as an Artist Enclave Overlay District. This status permits Old Southeast artists to use their residences as work studios, artist lofts, galleries, and instructional spaces. This spirit also is reflected in the efforts of the Old Southeast Neighborhood Association to foster community and diversity. Organized neighborhood events include yard sales, clean-ups, socials, holiday-themed activities, and the annual Artists Enclave Tour.

 With much of the neighborhood bordering Lassing Park and the waters of Tampa Bay, the Old Southeast feels secluded despite the fact that it's only blocks from the University of South Florida as well as only minutes from the 4th Street business corridor and the social and cultural offerings of Downtown St. Pete. Those people who call it home know they're living in a special place.
